Dear Prosperity Preacher (XXX),


I am writing to ask for a refund. I drank your tainted kool-aid, bought your lies, gave to get through seed faith sowing, and I ended up broke. Where is that hundredfold return I was promised for lining your pockets?

I listened to your broadcasts, bought your books and heaped up piles of your teaching CDs. I became a faith partner, a special giver, triple thither, a member of the club. Somehow, you convinced me that giving to you was giving to God.

For the longest time I was angry with God for failing to honor his word. One day he opened my eyes to the truth: He is not obligated to honor your promises; only His, and His Word never comes back void. It accomplishes what he sent it for. You were the one who promised health and wealth, blessings for cash, not Him. You are the one who lied, not God.

Giving is for the preaching of the Gospel, the conversion of souls, and the discipleship of the saints. Beyond that, the New Testament church gave to meet the needs of their own. The poor and slaves were not considered “poor soil,” a place not to sow your seed faith gift. Can you seriously see Peter and Paul urging the early church not to bless the poor because they were bad soil? God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith. If God chose them, who are you to teach they are a bad investment?

You were able to con me because I was once like you. I wanted to be you, to have what you had. I, too, was covetous, not content, greedy for gain. I was every bit the idolater you are. Like you, I loved money. It really did not occur to me that you got what you have by exploiting God’s people; i.e., making merchandise of them.

How did I read the Bible and not see:

“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not” (II Peter 2:1-3).

You are false prophets, false teachers, greedy for gain. You have gone the way of Balaam who prostituted his spiritual gifts for money. Yes, many have followed your pernicious ways. Pernicious means: fatal, deadly, lethal; causing injury or ruin. No wonder, for sin always pays its wages in death. You are bringing swift destruction upon yourselves.

It was through covetousness, the idolatry and love of money, coupled with your feigned promises, you made merchandise of me. You have made the gospel of grace a commodity of goods to be bought and sold. It is because of you and the Greedy 6 now under federal investigation, “the way of truth is spoken evil of.”

You might as well have Your Best Life Now, because the one you face in the age to come is looking fiery. You are one of those we are warned about in Scripture. “…Men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.”

Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:5-10

Say, if giving to get is really God’s idea, please refund my money plus a 10 percent love offering so you’ll really grow rich! If what you teach is true, apply it. Start with me. Look up my faithful giving in your records – you do keep financial records, right? – total it up, add 10% and refund away.

While you’re scrambling for your checkbook, allow me to correct a few of your errant teachings:

I am not a little God. Neither are you. Satan wanted to be a god and look where it got him!

Giving is to honor God, not you.

The early church did indeed lay their offerings at the feet of the Apostles. Please note the Apostles DID NOT put it in their pockets. They distributed it to needy believers.

“The anointing” is not a force or power. It speaks of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. As God, he cannot be transferred or given by your will and certainly not for money. Simon the Magician offered money to Peter for the anointing and was told he might burn in hell with his money for even asking. This puts your prophetic activation fees in a bad light.

If you have promoted yourself to the office of apostle, please understand that the true marks of an apostle are on his back from the stripes and beatings that come with the calling. If you cannot stomach the thought of traveling first class in a slave ship, flogging, beatings, beheading, death by the sword, being crucified upside down, or boiled alive, you might consider forgoing the self-promotion. A true apostolic call is an invitation to a living death, not a promise of earthly power and wealth.

The early church financially supported widows. They did not buy the names of widows from marketers and fleece them out of their insurance and life savings. May I suggest you have upset – really upset - the God of widows and orphans with your shameless greed?

3John1:2, “Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.” (NASB) was a common greeting in the Roman world. It meant more like, Break a leg, or Hope it goes well, or even Good luck. It’s not a faith confession. It is certainly not a lynchpin doctrine to prove we are to get rich preaching the Gospel. Of course, if your theological doctorate was earned, and not from a theological degree mill, and you had actually studied the Bible and ancient cultures and languages, you would know that.

Proverbs 22:16 warns that, “Giving to the rich will lead only to loss.” Shocking to believe that this warning covers giving to fat cat, jet-setting prosperity preachers, too. Giving to humble preachers of righteousness and repentance preaching? Sure. But you aren’t that, are you?

And how did I miss 1Tomothy 6:5? What a picture of you and your cohorts! It warns of the, “…constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.” Did you notice that those who teach that godliness is a means of financial gain are said to have depraved minds and are deprived of the truth? And as Jesus is the Truth, if logically follows that you do not know him. It’s no wonder you preach a different Gospel.

God is good. He does bless his children and nothing can separate us from his love. We cannot bribe, beg, or con our way to get his blessing. All he requires is our faith and obedience, trusting He will be the wonderful Father he claims to be. He freely gives us his kingdom. Surely groceries are not a challenge for him!

As for you, kindly keep your damnable heresies. Please refund my money. Com’on, you scammed me and we both know it. There are real evangelists all over the world crying out for support so they can be free to preach Christ. There are widows in my city that need food and heat. My family is hurting, too, and could use a few extra bucks for our needs. Send my full refund check plus your love offering to:
